About The Answer in the Room

We are keen to develop ways to share ideas within our Academy Trust and beyond. A blog to which all staff could contribute, both teaching and support staff seemed an ideal mechanism for this. Rather than one voice, we could capture many and begin to reflect the wide variety of skill and expertise we are lucky enough to have access to through our staff within the Trust.

No Pens Day

At Whalley Range, students are already given many opportunities to develop ‘presentational talk’, but this year we have focused on developing what Voice 21 have coined ‘exploratory talk’. Through the development of oracy in the curriculum, students have been engaging critically and constructively with others’ ideas in group discussion with an emphasis on replacing more informal language with standard English.

Oracy in Action

To meet the demands of the new GCSEs and curriculum changes, staff at Whalley Range have been teaching students three oracy strategies or ‘talk protocols’ to encourage them to develop their oral communication in both formal and informal situations.
